Now that President Trump has been cleared, where was the real Russian collusion?

Here’s the story of an angry lady, who was busy with collusion of her own.

She had hair of silvery gold, just like her hubby

They sought to share a throne.

It’s the story of a man named Donald

Who was busy with an empire of his own

But descended from his tower in the city

And he was all alone.

Till the one day when this lady met this fellow

And they knew it was much more than a hunch.

That this man would run against this angry woman

And that’s the way the Trumps became the White House bunch.

the White House bunch, the White House bunch

That’s the way the Trump’s became the White House bunch.

~~~~~~
 Yes, my friends, it’s been nearly four years since Donald J. Trump descended the escalator at Trump Tower to announce his 2016 candidacy for President of the United States.
Would this successful, millionaire businessman ruin yet, another Clinton plan to win the White House?
It mustn’t happen! The liberal media gave “the Donald” less than a snowball’s chance. In fact, they smirked and belittled the very prospect of anyone, much less Donald Trump, standing in the way of Hillary’s quest for the presidency. Everyone knew their liberal queen, Hillary Clinton, was the rightful heir to the White house throne.
Just as it was with Luke Skywalker – it was her destiny.
During the GOP primary, the world saw Donald Trump, in all his politically incorrect glory, take down 17 Republican candidates, one after another.
Democrats were elated! They would happily accept a challenge from such a “non-conformist” political figure. Certainly, the White House would be theirs for another eight years, allowing them to continue comrade Obama’s socialist agenda and fundamentally change the nation to align with their self-centered, progressive agenda.
Yes, a world in which whales are saved, and babies are murdered – with equal vigor. That’s the liberal dream.
Little did Donald Trump realize, his campaign journey and subsequent GOP primary victory would create enemies on both sides of the aisle. His critics now included liberal Democrats, Rino-Republicans and the entire liberal media.
Surely, this was an anomaly – a flash in the political pan.
But, still, Dems needed a backup plan. They knew Hillary was a candidate carrying baggage. Worst case scenario, Trump pulls out a victory and the Clinton, Russian collusion would be exposed! What if the truth was exposed about Uranium One? What if the world understood the level of quid-pro-quo the Clinton’s employed during Hillary’s reign as Secretary of State?
It was time for Plan B. Deep-state Democrats knew they were now operating at risk.
They knew they had engaged in collusion with the Russians in everything from Uranium One, to the fake Russian “reset”, to Bill Clinton’s outrageous $500,000.00 speaking fees! Liberals needed something in their arsenal to deflect attention away from the Clinton collusion and toward Donald Trump.
On November 8th, now known as the day the “earth stood still”, Donald Trump soundly defeated Hillary Clinton and became the 45th President of the United States. Liberal Democrats were in shock and denial over the loss. We witnessed emotions ranging from belligerent anger to mournful tears.
For conservatives, it was beautiful! But for Democrats, it wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right.
And it cannot stand.
They decided to execute their contingency plan and “turn the table” by creating fake collusion between Donald Trump and the Russians. But where to begin? They needed a catalyst for investigation. There were no facts, so they must create them!
Given Trump’s occasional, questionable lifestyle, Democrats decided to create a fake dossier regarding Donald Trump’s pre-presidential alleged sexual escapades in Russia. This fabricated dossier was later used to obtain FISA warrants eventually leading to special counsel, Robert Mueller’s 2-year investigation into alleged Trump – Russian collusion.
Taxpayers would fork out $25 million over the next two years as more than a dozen of Mueller’s “hand-picked” Democrat prosecutors combed the details of the investigation.
Let’s be clear, Democrats knew there was nothing there. They just knew they desperately needed a distraction from their crimes against the American political system. And the best way to do that was to “frame” Donald Trump for the exact same crime.
For two years, the plan worked perfectly. The liberal media was more than happy to be a partner in the attempt to frame President Trump. They hated him. In fact, the media’s hatred for Trump evolved the same way the Democrat hatred blossomed.
He called them out for who they truly had become – Fake and feckless.
But last week, all hades broke loose. Mueller had reached the end of the proverbial road in his investigation. They had done all and spent all they could to try to capture something, anything, President Trump had done wrong.
But they failed. President Trump was cleared of any wrong-doing. And true-to-form, he was the first to say, “I told you so!”
Now, the far left is predictably, going to do everything in their power to perpetuate this circus as long as possible. The fact that they will continue to look like fools doesn’t factor into their decision-making.
After all, they hate Trump more than they love their country. They know the only chance they have to win in 2020 is to take Trump out. He’s being too successful to run against his policies. They must run against his personality flaws.
collusion obama
Here’s a message to the GOP:
It’s time to go on offense. It’s time to turn the investigation around and investigate how the Trump investigation began.
I suggest beginning with Hillary Clinton, Barack Hussein Obama and the dirty Democrat machine.  Using the antics of the left, hire a special counsel and charge them with pursuing this with equal vigor as the Democrats did with Trump – maybe more.
Let’s ride this pony all the way into the 2020 presidential election. Keep them off balance.
And at the same time, let’s continue winning for Americans.
With this strategy, we win.
Do not naively believe if we take the high road, any high road, that Democrats will follow suit. Don’t be fools.
There is no high road with liberals. They all lead directly into the Swamp.
“Liberal Democrats used to attempt to hide their socialist agenda – Now they run campaigns on it.”
Despite liberal Democrats attempting to convince the nation that “Russian collusion” is at the top of voter’s priorities, nothing could be further from the truth. For several years, it’s been about jobs, the economy, national security and illegal immigration – period.
Once again, this group of “never Trumpers”, who have worked so hard to create a reason to impeach President Trump, are losing their minds over special counsel, Robert Mueller’s decision not to issue any more indictments as a result of his nearly 2-year investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump administration.
President Trump was confident and correct in his decision to allow, what many described as a “witch hunt”, to continue. But don’t expect Democrats to accept the findings of the investigation, which as of December 2018, had exceeded $25 million of taxpayer money per multiple news sources, to include USA Today in a column by Bart Jansen late last year.
Even following the release of the Mueller report to Congress, Democrats showed their down card.  The truth simply isn’t important.  They plan continue to dig, scrape and invent fake news to convince Americans that Donald Trump is the devil.
And it’s impact on you or our nation doesn’t matter.  Just stop Trump.
But, along with the faction of fruitcakes that will labor fecklessly in this regard, there’s another segment of the Democrat Party that is working toward accumulating voters for the 2020 presidential election who they hope will be ignorant enough of the facts to elect a candidate who “promises them the world” without any idea of how to pay for it.
It’s really alarming how many junior members of Congress who have no idea how government or the economy works. It’s equally alarming that many people are ignorant of their ignorance!
Let’s take a moment and look at the Democrat policy proposals that have been bandied about on Capitol Hill since Trump won the 2016 election.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to lower the minimum voting age to 16. Believe me, when I tell you this recommendation has nothing to do with improving our country. She is banking on younger voters voting Democrat, since 67 percent of voters under 30, went for a House Democrat in the 2018 midterm elections.
How many 16-year-olds, now-a-days, understand government and policy? Crazy idea.
Democrat presidential candidate Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren supports abolishing the U.S. Electoral College. Besides representing the antithesis of the core of our Republic, this crazy notion, again, isn’t about improving our nation.
Liberal loons are simply tired of losing elections “legally”. They would rather win them “illegally”.
Simply put, removing the electoral college removes the level playing field in terms of state representation and would empower states like New York and California to make national decisions, rendering smaller states without representation in a national election.
Liberals blocking Trump’s border wall and desiring to open the borders, certainly isn’t about improving our nation. It’s about bringing in people, whose only hope will be to rely upon Democrats providing them sanctuary and sustenance. Oh, and who will also vote for them every single time – regardless of whose name is on the ballot.
The term, “Free Stuff”, should just be added to the Democrat Party platform. It’s nothing more than buying votes. Prepare to continue to hear it from candidates like Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke, who, frankly, have gone off the deep-end, in terms of appealing to the “repressed” masses with their modern-day version of “Robin Hood” politics as they propose taking from those that “have” and re-distributing to those who “have not”.
Don’t forget. Robin Hood was a criminal.
Can you imagine what state our country would be in if we removed the incentive to work? Just look at other socialist third-world countries for a snapshot. Can anyone say, “socialism”?
And then there are those Democrats who are working to remove Donald Trump from the ballots in some states.   And they accuse the GOP of voter suppression?
President Donald Trump is simply doing what we had hoped other Republican presidents would do once we elected them. And Democrats can’t stand it.
The truth is, liberal Democrats have absolutely nothing to run on in 2020 that has anything at all to do with the betterment of our country. They want to give more rights to illegal immigrants and abortionists than they want you to have.
Something is inherently wrong with that ideology.
But, despite the fake news polls, Americans love want President Trump is doing for the nation. The economy is booming, unemployment for all demographics is at a 44-year low, and our nation has never been more respected and revered by other countries.
Yes, we will happily bank on Trump’s wins over Democrat’s woes in 2020.  Trump’s accomplishments in just 2 1/2 years is amazing.  The fact he did it all by himself, is astounding!
Just remember, the same simpletons who told you Trump would lose in a landslide to Hillary are the same pack who continue to convince you he is failing in leading our nation.
Sort of speaks volumes for the trust level we can have for liberal Democrats, doesn’t it?
Mark Caserta: Drag Queen Story Hour: Promoting more than “acceptance”
Drag Queen Story Hour working to expand its reading
me
Mark Caserta is an opinion columnist and editor for Free State Patriot
March 17, 2019
Drag queens across America and around the world are reading to our children at libraries, schools, bookstores, museums, summer camps, afterschool programs, and other community spaces.
These “gender confused” individuals claim to be “spreading a message of acceptance”.
I submit they are intentionally targeting our young, impressionable kids with the progressive goal of redefining the Biblical definition of a man and a woman and God’s plan of creation.
Additionally, I firmly believe this will be an avenue for sex predators to prey upon our children under the guise of “acceptance”. In fact, I’ve no doubt, it’s already happening.
You may recall, in December 2018, a group known as “Huntington Pride” sponsored Drag Queen Story Time in the city of Huntington, WV. The event, planned to be held at Pullman Square, aligned with our mayor’s message of “tolerance” and “inclusiveness”.
I failed to notice any outrage or dissension at city hall over the event, so I must presume this event had their blessing. Seems like a unique way to celebrate the Christmas season, doesn’t it? Perhaps the timing intentionally represented a somewhat “different” message than the actual reason for the season. I have my suspicions.
This local event was advertised on the group’s Facebook page:
Join Jade & Giselle for a story hour for all ages. Cookies and Hot Chocolate provided. ‘Tango Makes Three’ and ‘Jacob’s New Dress’ celebrate acceptance and inclusion in a way that makes sense to kids and adults alike and read by two of Huntington’s finest drag entertainers. Please join us!
dq 2
You may be unaware of what Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is all about.
Well, the group’s website candidly explains, “DQSH is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real.”
Oh, but as with most liberal-slanted initiatives, DQSH has become so much more. It’s now reading — riddled with unintended consequences.
As reported last week by KHOU Channel 11 in Houston, TX, a Houston Public Library allowed a registered child sex offender to read to kids at a Drag Queen Storytime event.
A media spokesperson for the library confirmed one of the program’s drag queens, Tatiana Mala Nina, whose original name is Alberto Garza, a 32-year-old child sex offender, was near young children and allowed to read to them.
In 2008, Garza was convicted of assaulting an 8-year-old boy.
In a statement, the Houston Public Library admits they didn’t do a background check on Garza and said Garza will not be involved in any future library programs.
If, indeed, the DQSH members are simply promoting acceptance of the LGBTQ lifestyle, why advertise (what one can only assume to be “training” to be a drag queen) by offering a “Drag Queen Makeup Tutorial for Teens on their website?
If you desire to check out the group’s website for yourself, go ahead. It’s https://www.dragqueenstoryhour.org/
dg 3
Let me be frank. (no pun intended).
While I don’t condone this lifestyle, I couldn’t care less if these “men” want to play dress up and put on makeup. I’ll simply use the phrase Christians often hear from the left, “Don’t push your belief system on me!”
Progressives will read this column and swear it’s written from hatred. Nothing could be further from the truth. God commands us to love one another. But He also commands obedience to His Word.
Shame on any administration, including Huntington, WV, that would allow this abomination to occur within city limits. It’s dereliction of duty to the people at the highest level and certainly not in our city’s best interest.
How long will it be before we see men dressed as women entering women’s restrooms, claiming to identify as female? You’re foolishly naïve if you don’t believe this will be used as a ploy to exploit the innocent among us.
How would you feel if a man entered a restroom with your young daughter and you were prohibited by law to deal with it? That’s exactly the LGBTQ vision — No boundaries, with total acceptance and inclusion.
After all, we can trust everyone, right?
Finally, it may interest local readers to know Huntington is among a distinguished group of cities such as, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco in allowing DQSH events.
Doesn’t that make you proud, Huntington?
Mark Caserta: Will ignorance of history allow liberal Democrats to campaign on socialism?
16 Mar
socialism
The founders of socialism
me
Mark Caserta is an opinion columnist and editor for Free State Patriot
March 16, 2019
Karl Marx, publisher of “The Communist Manifesto,” which introduced the concept of socialism in 1848, was quoted as saying, “From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.”
Over the years, history has proven, time and again, socialism is a failing concept, one which will keep a society oppressed in poverty and depression.
But as Free State Patriot historian, Doug Smith, often says, “those ignorant of the past are destined to relive it.
Have we become so ignorant of history that we are destined to travel a path to ultimate demise?
Barack Obama laid the foundation during his reign.
The false narrative that Donald Trump is leading America down the wrong path, is the liberal argument to continue his work. And, amazingly, a growing portion of the Democrat Party, spanning 20 states, (mostly younger folks) are onboard with the premise.
Premise? For what goal?
Well, I’m glad you asked.
Phase 3 of Obama’s campaign promise to “fundamentally change America” into something unrecognizable to the free world.
How? Frankly, by waiting for enough older, more knowledgeable Americans to “die off” so they could begin strategically influencing an entire generation of naïve, younger voters that “Capitalism is bad” and “Socialism is good”.
Conspiracy theorist, you say?
In this case? Yep, absolutely. It’s called progressivism.
Understand, the progressive movement began generations ago, indoctrinating our youth, literally rewriting history, clouding their minds sufficiently to eventually morph America into a socialist society.
Senator Bernie Sanders, an avowed socialist, was a young man when the crux of the movement began. U.S. Representative, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a doddering, young lightweight, wasn’t even a glimmer in someone’s eye.
But both are attempting to build a legacy by convincing Americans we have been on the wrong side of history for nearly 250 years.
Sanders and his ilk began decades ago. Cortez is simply operating from absolute ignorance.
But both are flirting dangerously with promoting a system that has proven to fail miserably. Beyond hating America, I can’t even begin to determine “motive”.
The capitalist government, under which we’ve prospered since our country’s inception, allows an economic and political system in which our nation’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. It’s literally been the catalyst for America being the exceptional nation we’ve become.
True socialists advocate a completely classless society, where the government controls all means of production and distribution of goods. Socialist believe the government knows best and everyone should be placed on a level playing field.
In other words, no competition, no incentive to achieve excellence or better ourselves in any way. It’s literally a method of reducing America to a third-world nation.
Socialism is redistribution. For these lunatics to succeed, it would mean “taking away” from Americans “that have” and “giving” to Americans that “don’t have”.
Here are a few precepts of a socialist state, as promoted by Saul Alinsky, an American “community organizer” and writer, as listed on a conservative website, Dawgman.com:
 1) Healthcare — Control healthcare and you control the people
2) Poverty — Increase the Poverty level as high as possible. Poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live.
3) Debt — Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. This enables government to increase taxes, producing more poverty.
4) Gun Control — Remove the ability to defend ourselves from the government. Work toward creating a police state.
5) Welfare — Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income).
6) Education — Control how our children are educated.
7) Media – Control the media.
8) Religion — Remove God from government and schools.
9) Class Warfare — Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. Create an argument for taxing the rich to give to the poor.
 Does any of this sound familiar? Community organizer? Government control of the people?
You bet it does! Right from the liberal playbook of the “anointed one” Barack Hussein Obama and his liberal minions.
Sadly, once again, liberal Democrats are working against America and for power over the people. It’s all about power.
In fact, every single step they take, be it, immigration, healthcare, taxes, military prowess, is toward having power over you and your life.
The only way for Capitalism to be defeated, is for Americans to allow ignorance of history to be perpetuated.
Stop the trend. Get educated. Educate your children. Learn how to debate the tenets of socialism.
And then vote accordingly.
Illegal immigration across our southern border has understandably been on the increase.
It’s certainly not because our efforts at the border have diminished, they’ve not.  Illegals are simply being instructed that if they ever wish to have opportunity to cross our southern border into the United States, they’d better do it quickly.
And it isn’t just people seeking a better future.
Along with the illegal immigrants, we are seeing an increase in gang activity, drug and firearm smuggling and human trafficking.  Anyone who tells you the humanitarian crisis at our border is manufactured, is trying to sell you something.
In other words, they’re propagating fake news, or news intended to persuade or influence, rather than inform.
Believe me, when I tell you President Trump will successfully build a wall and bring lawful stability to our southern borders.  He simply doesn’t know how to fail.
Given our current illegal immigration crisis and liberal Democrat’s vehement battle against President Trump’s border wall, how many times do you suppose President Barack Obama visited our southern border?
One time. He gave a speech. Go figure.
When was the last time you saw a story of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Sen. Chuck Schumer visiting the southern border for a fact-finding mission?
They avoid it like the plague.  And yet, they still claim there is no crisis at the border.
The truth is… the truth is not important to liberals. Just stop Trump – period.
Hypocrisy seems to be the new platform for the Democrat Party. Despite supporting border security and even voting for the Secure Fence Act of 2016, they shamefully continue to fight against yet, another win for President Trump.
And alas, the newest liberal Democrat talking points avoid the word “wall” like it was akin to saying “Islamic terrorist”.  They use words like, “barrier or fence”.  It’s actually very intellectually insulting.
The Democrat Party has eroded so badly, they act like small children throwing a tantrum because mommy wouldn’t buy them a toy.
Folks, we must ask ourselves, why?
Why have liberal Democrats “flip-flopped” on supporting re-enforcing our southern borders against illegal entry?  As void as they are of “morals and principles”, they aren’t stupid.  There must be a reason.
This liberal hatred of Donald Trump simply aligns with the Democrats ultimate goal.
Liberal Democrat’s ultimately desire to change the face of our nation, one in which will complacently succumb to the liberal ideology of government power and control over the people.  Frankly, those on the far left  would love for it to begin a a soft transition into socialism.
Democrats used to hide this socialist agenda – now, they run campaigns on it.  It’s called “progressivism”.
Trust me when I tell you they will never be satisfied until they own you.  They believe they know better, than you do, what you need to be successful in life.  They’ve proven it time and again.
Here’s a Democrat postulate for you. Liberal Democrats believe that you are stupid and they are wise.
Remember Obamacare?  Talk about a piece of legislation totally passed on lies!  And to date, Democrats refuse to address the falsehoods perpetrated on their constituents.
For those forgetting, this type of predictable border controversy is a primary reason for electing a president who is committed to nominating conservative justices to the highest court in the land!
No doubt, we will see other challenges escalated to the Supreme Court, such as live-birth abortion or gun control.  Owning a conservative balance insures a fighting chance for our children’s future!
President Trump called it accurately when he predicted his National Emergency Declaration would be challenged in the lower courts, probably failing, but then eventually decided at the Supreme Court.
Let’s move President Trump’s National Emergency Declaration through the courts and allow the Supreme Court to decide.
Dig in.  The battle has just begun.
Is there some sort of “rite of passage” that occurs following the election of politicians which converts them into spineless “representatives” of the people, unable to see beyond winning their next election?
Now, I know some well-meaning politicians, (not many) who attempt to stay focused on their campaign promises and work diligently toward delivering for their constituents.
Contrary to the liberal media, Donald J. Trump is one of them. His “archaic” approach to living up to one’s pledges and working hard for those who elected him to office, has certainly becoming a “pipe dream” for voters in today’s modern era.
But liberal Democrats are the very worst.
Positioned as the predominate party in the state of West Virginia since the early 1930’s, their reign helped perpetually cripple our state and move us to the cellar in nearly every metric regarding jobs, the economy, education, you name it, West Virginia falls on the lower side of the grading curve.
In many regards, progressive Democrats were arguably successful in their mission in our state. Their ideology of capturing the poor and uneducated in their liberal nets of government sustenance has provided them a predictable voter base year after year.
And they did it all in the interest of “compassion” and “benevolence”. Hogwash!
They did it for power.
Liberal Democrats live by the old proverb which says, “If you want to go fast – go alone. If you want to go far – go together”. They’ve adhered to that philosophy for decades.
They don’t go it alone, and they don’t eat their own!
In the face of battle or controversy, they circle the wagons and unload everything in their arsenal to protect their progressive, self-centered ideology of fabricated compassion for the “downtrodden” and “disenfranchised” among us.
It’s the equivalent of liberals keeping West Virginians “barefoot and pregnant” and in the kitchen and bedroom where they belong.
And don’t worry, you can abort your baby more easily than buying cold medication. And true to form, Democrats will keep the food stamps coming – just don’t get a job and become self-sufficient or they’ll drop you faster than The Ten Commandments on the courthouse lawn!
Just remember to vote for the hand that feeds you.
Republicans in Washington just aren’t that smart. I’ve can’t recall seeing such a group of feckless politicians wavering in the winds of discontent, like those on Capitol Hill.
It’s as though the ability to wield power on behalf of their constituents is an incomprehensible concept to them!
They flounder worse than Barack Obama not speaking from a teleprompter!
And believe me when I tell you Democrats are smiling on the sidelines, watching the GOP implode. Right now, the dissention among Republicans in Washington, is simply a gift to the Democrats, who remain cohesive, even in their reckless abandon.
Speaking of a gift of dissension, Republicans offered up a huge one last week at our State Capitol.
What the liberal media called an “anti-Muslim” display, resulted in a legislative aide seeking medical attention, another resigning and an “out of control” House Democrat kicking a door open to the House Chamber during prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Dems are so gracious in their approach.
Reportedly, a poster with an image of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, set off a firestorm, angering House Minority Whip Mike Caputo, D-Marion, to forcefully enter the chamber, injuring an aide.
Of course, the liberal media, ever on the attack of conservatives, escalated the news to a national forefront, predictably portraying the GOP as racist Islamophobes and Democrats as “Knights in shining armor”.
“I’m the one who kicked the door open,” Caputo said. “That’s how angry I was. I went over to that poster and I said it was a racist poster … . Yeah I kicked that door open; I’ll own it.”
I can’t help but wonder if Caputo would have forced the door open with the same reckless anger if it were an anti-Christian poster on the other side? Apparently, He and his liberal colleagues put on quite the show for the media.
But here’s the fly in the buttermilk.
Rather than members of the GOP presenting a united front and posturing offensively, they apparently chose to cower in the shadows, fearing retribution of the mainstream media.
Understand, this tactic of bullying and intimidation isn’t a new stratagem for the left.
Throughout the 1840’s and forward, Southern Democrats in the Congress increasingly used bullying tactics, threats, intimidation, and even physical violence to stifle debate, limit amendments, and shut down any attempts at limiting or threatening their current “sacred cow”: Slavery.
Northerners were increasingly incensed at the Southern Democrats bullying tactics, feeling that it robbed them of representation in the Congress, and gave Southerners a double advantage, in that they already had representation for their slaves, who could not vote, under the 3/5 Compromise. Northerners in Congress often stayed silent for fear of being challenged to a duel, or direct violence.
Indeed, in the 30 years prior to the Civil War, there were over 70 cases of direct violence between members of Congress.
Sound familiar? Is history doomed to repeat itself, beginning in the state of West Virginia?
The nation already suspects the Mountain State is filled with uneducated hillbillies, who cling to their “God” and “Guns”. Are we now revealing our true, racist colors?
No wonder these mountain people voted for their hero, Donald Trump!
Caputo and his liberal minions did absolutely nothing but embarrass themselves, our great state and the Democrat Party with this shameless display of workplace violence.
But, isn’t workplace violence grounds for termination?
You see, we understand Democrats not having a moral compass. We expect that. It’s not prerequisite to their platform. They will make whatever change is necessary to remain in power, even if it means re-writing or re-living history.
But if Republicans don’t learn how to control their majority status and leverage it to legislate on behalf of the people, it won’t be long before we hand this state, “lock, stock and barrel”, back to the Democrats.
Free State Patriot has nothing but respect for our local, Cabell County GOP management. We know them to be God-fearing, trustworthy individuals. They are true conservatives. We need more like them on the field of play.
But we must unite as a party, with a singular goal of delivering to our constituents. We will never be able to stand successfully against the Democrat machine otherwise.
The GOP must learn how to present a unified message with consistency. Only then can we effectively evaluate the need, plan the action and manage the results for the American people.
Let’s begin our own “progressive” approach to rebuilding the conservative foundation in West Virginia.
Let’s learn from history – not relive it.
huntington, wv. stats
In my 45 years of following politics, presidential administrations and the “to and fro” power of Congress, I can honestly record I’ve never been as disgusted and unimpressed as I am now with liberal Democrats on Capitol Hill.
I’m convinced far-left-leaning Democrats are willing to “turn over” America’s multiple wins under President Donald J. Trump simply to foil his successes for the American people and discredit him as the man who soundly defeated their liberal queen, Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
Not only is it childish, it’s borderline treasonous. As I’ve often alleged, the current nest of verminous Democrats in power, hate Donald Trump more than they love their country.
For representatives of the people, duly elected and hired to represent the interests of their constituents, to defy such a salient calling of servanthood to the people is simply despicable.
The irony behind these disloyal Americans calling for the impeachment or removal of a president who has in every way, put America first, is the epitome of hypocrisy and must cost them dearly at the polls.
Equally concerning is the fact most Republicans are sitting on the sidelines allowing Democrats and the liberal media to attack the very man, who may have helped seal their re-election in 2020.
Last week, Republicans successfully scored a rare victory in a Democrat-controlled House, passing legislation requiring authorities to notify U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) any time an illegal immigrant tries to purchase a gun.
Per ICE reporting, an average of more than 10 illegal immigrants attempt to purchase a gun every day in the U.S., ignoring yet, another law.
Earlier in the month of February, Democrats had approved legislation to require background checks for essentially all sales and firearm transfers, but rejected GOP-led efforts to amend the legislation to alert law enforcement when illegal immigrants failed those background checks.
Thank goodness, the Democrat suggestion for authorities to turn their heads on calling out illegal immigrants attempting to purchase guns was so outlandish, 26 Democrats (no doubt fearing “election retribution”) joined in support of the GOP amendment, with legislation ultimately passing on a 220-209 vote.
Now, I understand Washington, DC. Seems a long way from Huntington, WV. But folks, our city leaders and local media have the very same stench of liberalism as those progressives on Capitol Hill.
They are, indeed, cut from the very same bolt of cloth. The results of their policies support this conclusion.
The city of Huntington, WV., reportedly has a population of 48,735, yet only employs 19,494 people per Data USA, a free platform that allows users to collect, analyze and visualize shared U.S. government data. It is an ongoing partnership between Deloitte, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Macro Connections Group and Datawheel.
Both statistics are on the decline.
Our city’s primary employers include Healthcare and Social Assistance, Educational Services, and Accommodation and Food Service.
The Median Household Income is just under $30,000.00 with a poverty rate of 30.8 percent.
In comparison, the nation’s Median Household Income is $57,617.00 with a poverty rate of 14 percent.
With Huntington’s crime rate now among the highest per capita per U.S. cities, per Neighborhood Scout and our city leader’s apparently lacking any tangible plan of action, the lack of light at the end of the tunnel is troubling, to say the least.
Data shows that only 3 percent of cities across the nation are more dangerous than Huntington, WV. This is a far cry from the city in which I was born and raised.
We are now less than 5 months away from the end of the 18-month period during which Mayor Steve Williams promised, “We would be managing our way out of this…”, speaking of our fiscal mess resulting from the apparent mismanagement of funds.
It’s been my experience, politicians only understand the language of engaged voters. If Huntington’s citizens are to see any improvements in our crime rate, economy, jobs, and drug abuse, it isn’t going to happen with our current leadership.
This isn’t a personal attack on any individual. It’s a conservative assault on progressive polices that promote a self-centered approach to advancing political careers and liberal ideologies in a town spiraling downhill in nearly every single metric.
And don’t doubt me when I say, this effort to expose our local progressive leadership and their failing policies is just beginning. Conservatives are building their own movement and are determined to take our city back and return it to greatness.
Frankly, we’ve been backed into a corner, forced into taking matters into our own hands.
Our number one weapon? Our vote.
Get ready for a huge change in 2020.
Mark Caserta: Huntington, WV. – One of the most dangerous cities in the nation?
Is Huntington, West Virginia one of the most dangerous cities in the nation?
You decide.  But the facts are undeniable.
Per Neighborhood Scout, an online service which does a deep-dive analysis into the crime rates in cities across the nation, our fair city is certainly not providing any incentive for families to stay or relocate to our area.
Neighborhood Scout serves numerous entities which impact the growth and prosperity of a city, such as investors, lenders, brokers/agents and property managers, by providing them with the most current crime index information available utilizing analytical builds from “Location, Inc”.
This information, which was released from the FBI in September, 2018 (latest available), is troubling, to say the least.
The website and the corresponding information may be viewed at: https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/wv/huntington/crime
On a Crime Data scale, with “100” being the score of the safest cities in the U.S., Huntington is at a “3”!
All things being equal, this means that Huntington is only safer than 3% of all U.S. cities!
Additionally, the data reported shows, on average, our city incurs nearly 10 violent crimes per 1000 residents annually and more than 50 property crimes per 1000 each year.
For comparison, the state of West Virginia has just over 3.5 violent crimes per 1000 residents. Our city nearly “triples” even that of our entire state!
Your chances of being a victim of a violent crime in Huntington are 1 in 102, versus 1 in 285 on a state level. It’s worth noting, the website has Huntington’s current population at 47, 079. I believe it’s considerably lower than that, which would make the math even worse!
Your chances of being the victim of a property crime in Huntington are not any more promising. You stand a 1 in 20 chance of being on the receiving end of a property crime in our city as compared to 1 in 50 for the state of WV.
Certainly, sounds like a good case for reducing the level of police and fire protection in Huntington – doesn’t it?
Some of the safer neighborhoods in the Huntington area include:
  • Lesage, Martha / Hodges
  • Buffalo Creek / Shoals
  • Pea Ridge
  • Goodwill Rd / Spring Valley Drive
  • Melissa / West Pea Ridge
  • Locust Terrace / Locust Drive
  • 16th St. Road / Washington Blvd
  • Harveytown
  • Westmoreland.
Folks, you’re not going to hear this from our local city leaders or even our local media, who clearly have the responsibility to protect our citizens by informing and preparing them with this information.
It’s truly the epitome of political apathy toward our citizens and their well-being.
Amid this peril, it’s disconcerting that we have city leaders exhibiting such a dereliction of duty by allowing our city to not only operate with an understaffed and overworked police force, but to allow the decay of our infrastructure to continue.
There are those who simply don’t think it’s healthy to be transparent with this information.
But how can any problem be addressed without first, acknowledging it?
Our city is desperate for leadership who will stand up against the deep state cowering in the shadows, content to propagate their progressive agenda of inclusiveness and sanctuary ideology, while Huntington dies a slow death.
The satellite view is this. Within these United States, among the 35,000 cities recognized by U.S. Geological Survey, lies the city of Huntington, WV. A city, once widely recognized for being a great town to work and raise a family, now declining in population and on the verge of destitution.
We find ourselves riddled with drugs, crime and questionable leadership with no apparent plan to return business and manufacturing to our area.
What will it take to make Huntington great again? Is it even possible?
Yes. But it will require a lot savvier business acumen and a lot less self-centeredness.
And it will be up to the voters to find that person.
Yes, we need a hero.
How desperate must the situation in Huntington, WV. become before its citizens begin holding leadership accountable?
A city’s infrastructure is prerequisite to a community functioning properly. Sadly, the infrastructure of Huntington seems to be the least of our current administration’s concerns – to the point our safety is being placed at risk!
A recent post shared by social media blog, “Real Huntington”, revealed the entire compliment of Huntington’s Fire Department (HFD) Tower Trucks are completely out of service and unable to respond to calls requiring their special functions. In the event on a high-rise fire, the HFD is forced to call upon nearby fire departments in Barboursville, Green Valley or Kenova, WV. for support.
Any firefighter will tell you, that given the rampage of an intense fire, the time it would take for support to arrive from other cities places the city of Huntington and its residents at the mercy of time and could result in needless loss.
And given that time has no mercy, this loss could include the loss of life.
Managing a city’s budget and infrastructure must be more than an afterthought for this administration. Perhaps if we spent as much time managing these fiscal responsibilities as we do promoting “inclusiveness” and a “sanctuary mentality”, our city administration would be more successful in contributing to Huntington’s success and less to its demise.
What could possibly be more important in our city’s budget than the protection of its citizens?
Well, it appears, most everything.
As with liberals on Capitol Hill, it seems Huntington’s administration has such a disdain for conservative principles, it simply cannot think rationally. And the individuals, with this irrationally motivated mindset, seem intent on fundamentally changing what has historically been one of the most conservative cities I’ve known in my lifetime, Huntington, WV., into the East Coast distributor of progressive values.
Is it too much for the citizens of Huntington to ask, for the Mayor, the City Council and leaders responsible for our city’s infrastructure, to prioritize the allocation of funds for our city’s basic needs before consideration of discretional spending?
Frankly, the city of Huntington, WV. is dying a slow death. And city leadership is idly standing by allowing it to happen. While the rest of the nation is prospering under the conservative, principled leadership of President Trump, our city’s leadership appears hell-bent on heading the opposite direction in every sense of the word.
It’s appalling that our local news outlets, fail miserably at reporting the critical nature of our situation. Has anyone read anything in the Herald Dispatch or seen any viable reporting on WSAZ regarding our city’s leadership liabilities?
And you’re not going to. Can anyone say “Deep State” protection?
Per City.Data.com, Huntington, West Virginia has become one of the most dangerous cities in the nation. Per capita, Huntington’s crime index is higher than 97.2 percent of other cities in our country. That’s an incredible statistic!
And the buck stops with our city’s leadership and the poor business acumen that inundates our courthouse.
We are now less than 6 months away from the end of the 18-month period during which Mayor Steve Williams promised, “We would be managing our way out of this…”, speaking of the fiscal mess which he has allowed.
Does anyone feel more secure, living in the city limits? Do we see manufacturing jobs returning to our beloved community? Are you better off now than you were prior to the current administration?
If the answer to these questions is “no”, it’s time to take our future back with leadership that will put Huntington first, rather than a political career.
Harsh words? Absolutely! It’s time.
Make Huntington Great Again!
Doug Smith: Text of address to Cabell County GOP event
7 Feb
gop event
Doug Smith is an historian and Associate Editor for Free State Patriot.  He recently addressed the Cabell County GOP at an event sponsored by the Cabell County Republican Executive Committee.  The following is the text from his oratory.
DOUG FOR FSP
I used to love football. Up until it became a political football, instead of a sport, I was crazy about the game. My 3 favorite teams were Green Bay, Marshall, and anyone playing WVU.
Vince Lombardi often said “When you continue to be defeated, go back to the basics. “So in his first practice with the Pack, after they blew a 4th quarter lead to lose the 1961 Championship game, he began with:
Gentlemen, this is a football. To which Wide Receiver Max McGee responded, “Slow down, Coach. You’re going too fast. “
I’d like to explore for a few moments the GOP penchant for losing fights they have in the bag, by taking Lombardi s advice to go back to the basics. Perhaps to start winning on conservative issues, we need to begin by understanding, and being able to defend, what we believe and who we are as conservatives. When I say defend, I do not mean to make excuses, as in GW Bush’s “compassionate Conservative.” This falsely implies 1: that to be conservative is to lack compassion, and 2: that compassion is the only worthwhile attribute.
On the 4th of July 1976, the 200th birthday of the United States, I walked down to pier 7 of the Navy Submarine Base, New London, CT, and reported aboard USS Gato, SSN 615, a 594 Class Nuclear Attack Submarine. Gato was the newest in the class of faster, silent, deep-diving Submarines, capable of operating at depths greater than 400 ft at speeds more than 25 knots. We carried 16 high speed Mk 48 anti-ship torpedoes, and up to 6 SubRoc anti-Submarine Rocket propelled Nuclear Warhead Depth Charges, with a variable yield from 1.5 to 250 Kilotons depending on the target. They had a kill radius of 5 miles. In plain terms, that means anything within 5 miles in any direction of ground zero simply ceased to exist.
By way of comparison, Little Boy, the bomb that devastated Hiroshima had a yield of 5 Kilotons.
Our mission was to hunt down and track Soviet Ballistic Missile Submarines, which had the capability to wipe out American cities. In my 5 years on the boat, I saw valves stamped “made by De Laval, of Huntington, WV”. They were cast out of K-Monel and Ni Cu produced at International Nickel, in Huntington, WV. That could account for a projected Soviet Submarine ICBM target map I saw with a circle drawn neatly around the Nickel Plant. They say that all politics is local, and regardless of the philosophical questions involved, all war in ultimately personal.
Given the nature of our weapons, and our mission, it was reasonable to ask the question: Do you have any problems firing a nuclear weapon and killing every man aboard an enemy submarine? Or perhaps an enemy task force, with hundreds of men? If the order comes, and your hand is on the switch, will you fire the weapon? And they do ask. Given that those 200 Russians 20 miles from us might be the ones launching a missile at Huntington, 1000 miles away from us; the answer was easy for me as a 20-year-old sailor. Darn right, I will. (Being a Submariner, talking to a Submarine Officer, I confess I may have phrased it a bit more colorfully at the time.)
At 63, as a somewhat faded and careworn old Chief Petty Officer, my answer is unchanged. Assuming things were so dire they would take me back on a boat again. That is because of my conviction the United States is the finest and freest country in the history of the world; that she has done more to free people and raise them out of poverty and misery than all the nations and empires that have ever existed. She is
Infinitely worth fighting for, worth killing for, worth dying for. That is why we were still out there. Despite the loss of the Thresher, the lead boat in our class, with a loss of all hands. We closed the hatch, and we submerged, and we spent months on end ready to go to war on 2 minutes notice. “A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.” John Stuart Mill. But the sad reality is that going down to the sea in ships is an adventure for young men.
So.
How can I defend that conviction about America when I am no longer wearing the uniform? There are many things I can do: work hard, be honest, be a good neighbor. But to be a good citizen, part of the task is to defend and support those ideals and principles that led to the founding of the country, and subsequently to all, and it is a very great all, the good she has done.
I believe those principles are best guarded and nurtured by the collection of beliefs and ideals that is Conservatism.
Abe Lincoln was our 1st Republican President, and he considered himself a conservative. He was certainly one Republican President for whom Republican and Conservative were synonymous. That is not always the case. Lincoln was certainly the first POTUS to follow that philosophy to preserve the vision of the Founders of the United States against those who rejected it in favor of an elitist form of government. Lincoln once said:
“What is conservatism? Is it not the adherence to the old and tried against the new and untried?”
I take his words to heart. While he was not the first conservative, (that distinction belongs to Edmund Burke, he certainly believed that this American ideal and experiment, 87 years in, was worth conserving, and was willing to pay a terrible price to see it endure.
I have been a Republican since the Gipper ran for POTUS while I was a young sailor and that Old Peanut Farmer was my C in C. I love and appreciate what Reagan stood for. I hate the capacity of my Grand Old Party for snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory. Reagan agreed to amnesty in exchange for border security for which we are still waiting. Bush 41 made a deal with Ted Kennedy (Marylin Monroe and Mary Jo Kopechne and the Bay of Pigs fighters will tell you making a deal with a Kennedy is not going to end well for you) to break his promise of no new taxes in exchange for cuts in spending, for which we are still waiting. I don’t know about you, but after a decade of We will repeal Obamacare, root and branch, if you just give us the House. And the Senate. And more of the Senate. And the White House. And more judges. And we still wait for the border security Ted Kennedy promised Reagan, the spending cuts Ted Kennedy promised George HW Bush, (as far as I can tell, the only promise Ted Kennedy ever kept was “ Mary Jo, baby, I’m going to take you for the ride of your life), and the repeal of Obamacare. The GOP is so good at losing, you have to either decide that they are indeed the Stupid Party, or that they are not serious about their principles and RINO s like McCain and Flake are more mainstream than we like to admit. Now, I for one, am about ready to stop kicking that football.
To quote Ricky Ricardo, Lucy, you got some “splaining” to do!
When the Left wins, we get, predictably, higher taxes, more regulations, more abortions, more illegals, more political correctness (which is a high-sounding way of rejecting common sense), more Congressmen with $ 90,000 dollars in cold cash in their freezers, and the 40-year cancer on our culture and body politic that is the Clintons. When we win, we get, what? A few marginal victories but lose on the big issues. We pass lots of meaningless bills to repeal Obamacare, right up till we actually have the power to do so, and then we fold like a cheap suit.) If the Left wins, even a slight majority, we go along with their Ginsberg and Kagan Justices, and their whole agenda with a somewhat apologetic “Well, elections have consequences, they did win.” When WE win, we somewhat apologetically say, well, you have to understand how politics works. After all, we only have one half of one third of government and there is only so much we can do.” Odd how such restrictions did not seem to matter to a Democrat House, or, for most of my lifetime, a Democrat WV Legislature.
It has been said that Republicans are the stupid party, Democrats are the evil party. The GOP can always be counted on to do something stupid. The Democrats can always be relied upon to do something evil. Occasionally, the GOP is stupid enough to compromise with the Democrats, and then we get something spectacularly both stupid and evil.
So, do we really continue to lose because we are stupid? Well, let us entertain a different theory.
T.S. Eliot said “the tendency of liberals is to create bodies of men and women-of all classes-detached from tradition, alienated from religion, and susceptible to mass suggestion-mob rule. And a mob will be no less a mob if it is well fed, well clothed, well housed, and well disciplined.”
William F Buckley said the conservative movement is an alternative to the liberal establishment that is based on principles of “freedom, individuality, the sense of community, the sanctity of the family, the supremacy of the conscience, the spiritual view of life.”
Conservatism as we know it began around the time of the French Revolution. Men like Edmund Burke saw that while there was much to criticize about Parliament and King, the barbaric fanaticism of the Mob rule in France tore at the foundations of civilized society and was not the way to go. Robespierre, the man who made the Mob, and egged them along to murder King Louie, Marie Antoinette, and 16,000 more Frenchmen in the terror, may have had a few moments to reconsider his position before the guillotine proved the problem of the Mob. We will never know, of course, because, to paraphrase the poem “A tisket a tasket a head in a basket, cannot respond to the questions we ask it.” Burke s “Reflections on the Revolution in France” influenced leaders both in England and in America to establish governments that would preserve justice and freedom.
. Our American War of Independence was not so much a revolution, as a separation from England. Adams, Hamilton, and Madison, did not desire to depose the King and tear down society in England, but to maintain and expand self-rule and freedom in American. The Constitution, written with an understanding of history and human nature, and recent bloody experience of the horrors of the French Revolution,     followed by a war of conquest by Napoleon, caused our founders to create arguably the most successful conservative device in all history.
Conservative leaders, ever since Burke and Adams, have subscribed to certain general ideas that we may set down, briefly, by way of definition. Conservatives distrust what Burke called “abstractions”—that is, absolute political dogmas divorced from practical experience and particular circumstances. They do believe, nevertheless, in the existence of certain abiding truths which govern the conduct of human society.
Perhaps the chief principles which have characterized American conservative thought are those outlined by DR Russel Kirk in his 1956 book “The Conservative Mind.”
Men and nations are governed by moral laws; and those laws have their origin in a wisdom that is more than human—in divine justice.
John Adams said “Our Constitution is made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. “At heart, political problems are moral and religious problems. The wise statesman tries to apprehend the moral law and govern his conduct accordingly. We have a moral debt to our ancestors, who bestowed upon us our civilization, and a moral obligation to the generations who will come after us. This debt is ordained of God. We have no right, therefore, to tamper impudently with human nature or with the delicate fabric of our civil social order.
Variety and diversity are the characteristics of a high civilization. Uniformity and absolute equality are the death of all real vigor and freedom in existence.
Conservatives resist with impartial strength the uniformity of a tyrant or an oligarchy, and the uniformity of what Tocqueville called “democratic despotism.” The PC mob that becomes hysterical at any thought that might differ from their own are a moribund piece of society. They can be “ safe and comfortable” in Orwell’s 1984 or Huxley’s Brave New World, but they have no idea how to live in Adams and Madison’s society of free people.
Justice means that every man and every woman have the right to what is their own—to the things best suited to their own nature, to the rewards of their ability and integrity, to their property and their personality.
Civilized society requires that all men and women have equal rights before the law, but that equality should not extend to equality of condition: that is, society is a great partnership, in which all have equal rights—but not to equal things. The just society requires sound leadership, different rewards for different abilities, and a sense of respect and duty.
Property and freedom are inseparably connected; economic leveling is not economic progress.
Conservatives value property for its own sake, of course; but they value it even more because without it all men and women are at the mercy of an omnipotent government.
Case in point, ask Suzette Kelo In 2000, the Town of New London, Ct, acting on a promised 1000 new jobs and 1.2 mill new taxes, exercised eminent domain to take homes in the Fort Trumbull area, including Kelo s, for Urban Renewal, with the specific purpose of giving the land to a developer for $1 a year, who would, after development, bring Pfizer, who received 10 years of tax breaks on their existing facility, and other tenants. The only “public purpose” was more money for New London. She sued. The case was heard by SCOTUS in 2005, Kelo vs New London was decided 5-4 for New London, with O’Conner, Scalia, Rehnquist, Thomas dissenting this grab of power and loss of rights as a total misreading of the Constitution. The Town subsequently spent 78 million to demolish the property, (a private party bought and moved the little pink house, as a monument to the stupidity) only to have Pfizer backed out, after their 10 year tax breaks expired, instead losing 1000 jobs. As it turned out, the property was only ever used as dump for Hurricane Irene debris. As of today, had the deal gone through, and Pfizer paid the 1.2 mill a year, New London would still be down 56 mill. 42 states enacted laws restricting takings. Not, I might add, WV.
Power is full of danger; therefore, the good state is one in which power is checked and balanced, restricted by sound constitutions and customs.
So far as possible, political power ought to be kept in the hands of private persons and local institutions. Centralization is ordinarily a sign of social decadence. “The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant.”
John Stuart Mill
The past is a great storehouse of wisdom; as Burke said, “the individual is foolish, but the species is wise.” The conservative believes that we need to guide ourselves by the moral traditions, the social experience, and the whole complex body of knowledge bequeathed to us by our ancestors.
The conservative appeals beyond the rash opinion of the hour to what Chesterton called “the democracy of the dead”—that is, the considered opinions of the wise men and women who died before our time, the experience of the race. The conservative, in short, knows he was not born yesterday.
Modern society urgently needs true community: and true community is a world away from collectivism.
Real community is governed by love and charity, not by compulsion. Through churches, voluntary associations, local governments, and a variety of institutions, conservatives strive to keep community healthy. Conservatives are not selfish, but public-spirited. They know that collectivism means the end of real community, substituting uniformity for variety and force for willing cooperation.
“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.”
― Mark Twain
In the affairs of nations, the American conservative feels that his country ought to set an example to the world but ought not to try to remake the world in its image.
It is a law of politics, as well as of biology, that every living thing loves above all else—even above its own life—its distinct identity, which sets it off from all other things. The conservative does not aspire to domination of the world, nor does he relish the prospect of a world reduced to a single pattern of government and civilization.
Men and women are not perfectible, conservatives know; and neither are political institutions.
We cannot make a heaven on earth, though we may make a hell. We all are creatures of mingled good and evil; and, good institutions neglected, and ancient moral principles ignored, the evil in us tends to predominate. Therefore, the conservative is suspicious of all utopian schemes. He does not believe that, by power of positive law, we can solve all the problems of humanity. We can hope to make our world tolerable, but we cannot make it perfect. When progress is achieved, it is through prudent recognition of the limitations of human nature. We understand that the desire for the perfect is often an impediment to the achievement of the excellent. We have seen the results of Utopian schemes played out over and over, and see the results now in the streets of Caracas. (And, parenthetically, hear them espoused in the halls of Congress.)
Change and reform, conservatives are convinced, are not identical: moral and political innovation can be destructive as well as beneficial; and if innovation is undertaken in a spirit of presumption and enthusiasm, probably it will be disastrous.
All human institutions alter to some extent from age to age, for slow change is the means of conserving society, just as it is the means for renewing the human body. But American conservatives endeavor to reconcile the growth and alteration essential to our life with the strength of our social and moral traditions. Lord Falkland said “When it is not necessary to change, it is necessary not to change.” They understand that men and women are best content when they can feel that they live in a stable world of enduring values.
Chesterton’s Fence
In the matter of reforming things, as distinct from deforming them, there is one plain and simple principle; a principle which will probably be called a paradox. There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: “If you don’t see the use of it, I certainly won’t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.
Conservatism, then, is not simply the concern of the people who have much property and influence; it is not simply the defense of privilege and status. Most conservatives are neither rich nor powerful. But they do, even the most humble of them, derive great benefits from our established Republic. They have liberty, security of person and home, equal protection of the laws, the right to the fruits of their industry, and opportunity to do the best that is in them. They have a right to personality in life, and a right to consolation in death. Conservative principles shelter the hopes of everyone in society. And conservatism is a social concept important to everyone who desires equal justice and personal freedom and all the lovable old ways of humanity. Conservatism is not simply a defense of “capitalism.” (“Capitalism,” indeed, is a word coined by Karl Marx, intended from the beginning to imply that the only thing conservatives defend is vast accumulations of private capital.) But the true conservative does stoutly defend private property and a free economy, both for their own sake and because these are means to great ends.
No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.
Edmund Burke, 1729-1797
